Road Trippin to Texas

One of the perks to working at the hospital is that I often end up with a couple days off in a row.  A few weeks ago, I had six!!!  The perfect opportunity to go visit with great-grandma, in Ft. Worth.

Great-grandma is 98.  She has breast cancer that has spread to her bones.  She has heart problems.  And she's on Hospice.  When she turned 98, this last October, many of the family members went to Ft. Worth to celebrate her.  Including Owynn.  But not mommy.  I had just started the new job and didn't have a string of days off. 

I worked three days last week and on Saturday morning, we packed up the car and hit the road. We stopped in Albuquerque and had breakfast with Nana and Yaya. They were meeting someone in Albuquerque, so it worked out perfectly!  And then we were off. 

O did great for the first 9 hours.  He read books, colored, watched movies, sang songs and napped.  Then, he told me he was done riding.  And where is Texas?  Where is Uncle John's house?  No, I didn't want Subway, I want DQ. We had 3.5 hours to go. I thanked God for my small bladder which allowed for numerous breaks to stretch our legs. 

We made it to Uncle John's house without incident.  O was super excited to see everyone.  Right before we got there, he started recounting his last visit. In October. With Nana and Yaya. "And Aunt Barbara says, 'whatcho got boy?'"

We hugged on great-grandma a lot. Played with cousins. Played basketball and walked around the pool wearing new swim goggles. 

We even played games with great-grandma. 

We also went to the Stock Show and Rodeo in Ft. Worth. We saw animals and rode some rides, even ate some funnel cake!!

On the way out to the car, there was a calf just waiting to meet Owynn!!  He was so excited. He asked when her birthday was and was surprised when he learned she was only one year old!!

The trip home took two days.  We drove to El Paso and stayed the night with our friends, Jenny and Brian and their two kids, Gabe and Aubry. This morning we awoke to a blizzard that delayed us by two hours. Again, we took lots of potty breaks and walked a lot. We even found a playground at one rest area!!  O was beyond happy!

It was a great trip and we are blessed to have been able to spend that time with great-grandma. We love her a whole bunch!
